Types Of Internet
:
Documents
There are many millions of documents about a variety of subjects,
which can be found on the Internet via the World Wide Web.
Every medium in digital form can be stored on the Internet:
text files, texts that have been edited by a word processor,
sound, photographs, cartoons, video images.
On the Web, you will come across all kinds of information
about all sorts of subjects: photos of a weather satellite,
newspaper articles, scientific papers, literary text, descriptions
of places of interest for tourists, order forms for CDs, etc.
Computer
software
A large amount of computer software is also available on the
Internet. Often, the software can be downloaded free of charge;
this is the so-called freeware. A great deal of software is
available for various purposes: spreadsheets, graphics, word
processing, anti-virus, communication.
Electronic
journals/articles
On the Internet, you can find newspapers, popular magazines,
and scientific and general journals. A large proportion of
the present electronic magazines contains the same text and
pictures as the paper variety of the same magazine. Often,
they contain nothing new in comparison with the paper version,
except for the occasional hyperlink with related documents.
These hyperlinks refer to another document, or to a place
in the same document where more information, related to the
word in question, is to be found. The main advantage of electronic
magazines is especially their quick dissemination and the
simple method of storage.
Campus
wide information servers (CWIS)
A CWIS is an interactive search system linked by a network,
giving access to information useful to the members of a particular
academic institution. These sites contain local information
about a university and its staff, organization, services,
faculties, research institutes, and education programmes.
Via the Web page of, especially, a library, interesting links
can often be found related to sites elsewhere on the Web.
Mailing
lists, discussion lists, and news groups
In the case of a mailing list, an e-mail message is simultaneously
sent to a large number of people. Mailing-list messages can
be read by anyone who can receive e-mail. Since sending messages
to large numbers of people byhand is a laborious business,
an automated sending system is usually employed. A mailing
list is used, for example, to make an announcement or to communicate
news to a large group of people.
News lists, also called discussion lists, offer the opportunity
to discuss a subject simultaneously with a number of people.
This exchange of messages takes place via the normal e-mail
system. If you want to participate in a news list, you have
to report to the computer managing the list, i.e., theso-called
list server.
